Interactive games improve the sense of belonging and allow students to practice empathy, active listening, and safety strategies in a low-stakes environment.

Here are three slow-prep belonging games that require virtually zero prep time:

1. "Who Stole the Spotlight?" Compliment Circle

Time: 10 minutes

The Goal: It teaches students to look beyond surface-level observations and appreciate their peers' character traits.

How to Play: Sit in a circle. Pass a small object (like a plush mascot) around the room. Whoever holds the object must turn to their neighbor and give them a specific, non-physical compliment

Here are some examples:

  • “You are really kind to others.”

  • “You make people feel welcome.”

  • “You are a good friend.”

  • “You are thoughtful.”

  • “You care about other people.”

  • “You are respectful.”

  • “You are a great listener.”

  • “You put a lot of thought into that.”

  • “You make people feel included.”

2. Caring Majority Charades

Time: 15 minutes

The Goal: Role-playing gives kids concrete, practical scripts to use when real peer conflict arises.

How to Play: Write simple, age-appropriate scenarios on index cards (e.g., "Someone is sitting alone at lunch," "A peer gets teased for making a mistake," or "Someone is being cut off in line"). In small groups, students act out both the scenario and a safe, positive way to step in as an "upstander."

Here is a list of scenarios you can use:

3. The Kindness Chain Reaction Centre

Time: 5–10 minutes

How to Play: Provide a basket of pre-cut small strips of paper. During centre time or freetime, when a student observes a classmate performing a helpful or kind act, they write it down on their paper strip. At the end of each day, link the strips together to form a paper chain around the room.

The Goal: Visualizing their collective positive actions creates a tangible reminder that kindness is infectious. Plus, it serves as a great visual anchor during those hectic back to school weeks!
